Nasturtian Cupcakes

These are some nasturtians that I grow in the garden. The flowers and leaves are edible. They taste rather peppery so I thought that they would be good on a cupcake. A basic vanilla cupcake recipe with the grated rind of one orange added to the mixture and 1 tablespoon of orange juice from the same orange. I made a basic butter cream with unsalted butter and icing sugar plus a dash of orange juice. I topped it all off with a nasturtian on each cupcake and some of the small new leaves. I washed the flower and leaves carefully it would not do to have some wildlife on there!
This would also go with an orange curd recipe as the filling. The recipes for all these are in the labels list and the curd recipes are also on my chutney blog. Has anyone used any other types of flowers?

Nasturtian cupcakes for a summer afternoon tea in the garden served with orange pekoe tea or some jasmine flower tea. Now that's an idea cupcakes flavoured with both those teas.

Blue Borage Cupcakes

I have grown these edible flowers in the garden. The plant is called BORAGE. The flowers are like small blue stars. The leaves are a bit hairy and taste like cucumber.
I put lemon butter cream on top of lemon cupcakes. A basic vanilla cupcake with the grated rind of a lemon added and a teaspoon of lemon juice. I just put the fresh flowers on the top. I cleaned them and made sure they had no insects. I think they look so pretty. I have called these blue borage cupcakes. They can be used as a garnish on salads, cold soups and fresh fruit salads.

Check out the LABELS LIST on the left for lots of ideas and all the other information. Happy baking, thanks for reading, Crazycupcakes.

Flower Cupcakes

Well Spring in the UK has felt like summer. We have had brilliant weather so I have been out rather than in. This is a shot of the moors North of Manchester with 2 Spring flowers, the daisy and dandelion. They inspired me to decorate cupcakes.
I put a basic icing on the cupcakes with icing sugar and a drop of water and a drop of yellow colouring.. This was enough as I knew the surface would be covered.

I decided to make the daisy. I rolled out some ready made white icing into a rectangle.

I used a small sharp knife to cut triangular shaped petals. I arranged these around the cupcake on top of the icing to create a daisy.

I put on a second layer of triangular petals to make the flower head on the cupcakes,

I kept going with another layer of petals to get that overlap effect. I then used some writing icing in yellow to make the small dots for the centre.

It is photographed with the hat I have been wearing in the garden. A sun hat from Spain.

I decorated the second flower cupcake with a spiral of white icing and wiggly lines of yellow writing icing to create a pattern inspired by the yellow of the dandelion.
I have been thinking about future cupcake recipes and I am planning to make some on a retro theme of English cakes and recipes . I also like the idea of doing cupcakes on the theme of India and Bhutan as I spent 2 weeks in Bhutan at Christmas and I have not yet used those ideas yet for cupcakes. So it is off to do more investigating. I have posted some recent soup, salads and English casseroles on the other blogs if you fancy a look.
The cupcake store has so many ideas too.

The pointsettia plant is also called the flame leaf, Christmas star, Winter rose, Noche Buena or Pascua. It is a sub-tropical plant known for its striking red colour at Christmas time. It's often used as a floral Christmas decoration because of its festive colours. The red flowers are really large bunches of coloured leaves. In the U.K. these are very popular to bring colour to the home or for use as table decorations at Christmas. The shops are now filling up with them.
In South American folklore, Pointsettias are central to the creation myth story of the Mayan Indians. It is believed that Pointsettias are powerful creatures from another world. The plants are native to South America but are now cultivated all over the world .

I hope you get lots of ideas for cupcake recipes and decoration.

REMEMBRANCE DAY CUPCAKES

Remembrance day in the United Kingdom is celebrated on the Eleventh of November. The main symbol used is a poppy. This is used because the poppy grew on the battlefields of France and Europe in the world Wars. On this day we remember all those who have died to give us our freedom. These cupcakes are to remember this day.

DECORATING POPPY CUPCAKES

How to decorate Poppy Cupcakes
First of all I collected lots of pictures of the flowers from the internet and books and stuck these in my scrapbook. I then decided how I could make the edible flowers. I knew that I needed red icing, black icing for the centres and I also wanted to make the flowers look natural. I looked at the type of Poppy that is sold for the British Legion

These rather abstract flowers gave me the idea of the flower and the cross. The cross represents the war graves that I have seen in the Netherlands.
With these I tried to make a natural poppy by shaping the ready made red icing into natural flowers with frilly edges. I used ready made green icing for the leaves. I used writing icing in the centre to decorate the cupcakes. The pictures helped me with the ideas.
